On The Way

by Gijs Hendriks Quartet and guests, recorded in 1976-77

The double-lp 'On The Way' from 1977 was never released due to legal problems, but here it finally is, thirty-five years after it was recorded! As one of Holland's top jazz musicians, multi reed-player Gijs Hendriks always went his own way – too rhythmic for the 'free scene' and too freaky for the mainstream. The music by the quartet with Franco-German pianist extraordinaire Siegfried Kessler, bassist Bert van Erk, and a young Michael Baird on drums, together with guests Slide Hampton (USA) on trombone, trumpeter Sonny Grey (JAM), and legendary conga drummer Raul Burnet (CUR), still sounds fresh and happening today. Total time: 73'55". 6 page digipac.

Tracklist: 1. A Minor Foolin', 2. Canto De Ossanha, 3. Just A Ballad , 4. Where Have I Heard?, 5. Da's Bes, 6. The Latest Piece, 7. Het Bitonale Stukje, 8. Round About Midnight.

"In his long career Gijs Hendriks often just did not fit in: too adventurous for the mainstream, too swinging for the avantgarde. You realise how ridiculous and harmful that 'conflict of directions' was when you hear these recordings from 1976 and 1977 of Hendriks' quartet. This is excellent, still fresh jazz by an individualist who, with bebop as a basis, had developed an own language."
"Anno 2012 the combining of free improvisation and composed structures, swing and recognisability, has become a very normal thing. One could say that Gijs Hendriks in the seventies was ahead of his time. The music has stood the test of time with ease."
